It's not vital, but when I was playing and I thought I was doing fine, everything sounds good, and then suddenly I get a red flash and I know I'm done. I don't know what the leeway is, but let's say you have it as X hundredths of a second off of perfect timing. I don't know if this would be hard to implement, but what if there was a way you could get one of the background colors to indicate how "good" each hit was? It goes red when you make a mistake right now. I can see you had the game purposely zoom out of the level after the player fails so we can't really study the level.
